Conventions indicating a dead species
| Convention | Meaning |

| parentheses | Species codes in parentheses indicate dead species |
| circled | Circled species codes indicates dead species. These were entered as the species code followed by "circled", i.e., "Atr circled". |
| number following a tree species code | A tree species code followed by a number indicates a trunk, i.e., "S 60". The number is the diameter of the trunk in inches. |
| stump | A tree stump |
| Cut | A tree that has been cut; a stump |
| snag | A dead, standing tree |
| logged | A logged tree |

Miscellaneous Codes
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| codes following Lit | Lit is the code for litter. When followed by a string of species codes, the species codes indicate the composition of the litter. |
| R circled | VTM Field Manual (p.86) lists this as meaning "Rock outcrops prohibiting vegetation". However, it could also refer to a dead Redwood tree. |
| Rep | Reproduction; a seedling. |
| Repro | Reproduction; a seedling. |
| Sprout | Reproduction; a seedling. |
| number | A number instead of a species code usually indicates the specimen number for an unknown species. |
